Crossing the Equator

Dateline – Somewhere off the coast of Ecuador, Latitude 0 Degrees 0 Minutes. – July 3rd

Crossing the equator at sea means…. (da dum…. da dum…) Neptune Day!

Neptune day? An old maritime tradition wherein first-time crossers (pollywogs) ask permission of the gods of the sea, and are initiated into the sea-faring community by those who have crossed before (shellbacks). The initiation involves such fun things as kissing a fish. Which is where I came in….

And despite my holding a dead fish for the better part of two hours, Dawn was still willing to kiss me (well, barely…).

And so you don’t think it’s just goofy people like me who participate, where’s our Executive Dean John Burkoff (a distinguished professor of law at Univ. of Pittsburgh) as King Neptune and his spouse Nancy Burkoff (also a lawyer who works for a US District Court judge) as Queen Minerva.

‘Nuff said….

This is disgusting! I am sick with envy, you two! My god... you are having a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And it sounds like you are living every minute of it. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. We can't wait to see you and hear stories in 'real time.' The photos are amazing! We miss you guys. Much love, Pat and Jane
